Basics of Iyengar Yoga

The very basics of Iyengar Yoga are primarily learned through mastering the postures (asanas) and breath control (pranayama).


In any Iyengar Yoga the stress will be on three main points first being the correct body posture. A correct body alignment or posture is advocated in iyengar yoga only to have a hormonious position so as to avoid any bodily injuries and to perform the yoga correctly.

A person doing Iyengar Yoga will be able to effectively control the body pain and other aches and can get an improved body stature. In many cases people were seen using supporting accessories such as blocks or belts while practicing Iyegar Yoga and this yoga is also known to cure many of the ailments and chronic medical conditions.

Iyengar Yoga was initially founded by B.K.S. Iyengar and has become one of the favourite forms of yoga today. There are many postures involved in Iyengar Yoga, and one such posture is standing posture that is aimed in improving strong legs besides improving the overall general virility, better blood circulation, a well balanced body condition that makes a strong foundation for an overall well being.

During the extension of certain postures supporting materials such as pillows or blocks are used to further enhance the symmetry and in iyengar yoga greater importance is accorded for the correct positioning of one’s hands, feet, pelvis area, spinal cord position, arms and legs. The main purpose for such positioning is to have a better body control and circulation that will aid in reaping a better overall health.
